About Gulf of Fonseca
The Gulf of Fonseca is a gulf of the Pacific Ocean shared between El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, located in the eastern part of the country, in the department of La Unión. On the Salvadoran side, it features an archipelago of volcanic islands inhabited by fishing communities and surrounded by mangroves. The Surf City II corridor, expanded in 2025, reaches this area via the eastern coastal road. At sunset, the silhouette of the volcanoes stands out against the waters of the gulf. The city of La Unión serves as the gateway: from its docks, boats depart to the islands and communities of the gulf. The activity revolves around artisanal fishing, and the tours combine beach visits, birdwatching, and trips to the island communities. Access to the islands is always by boat, with departures depending on the tide.
