Brief History
The origin of La Unión is linked to the use of its bay as a dock. In the late 17th century, residents of Conchagua used this point for maritime transport; during the 18th century, it was known as Puerto de San Carlos, in reference to King Carlos III of Spain. After independence, in 1824 it was named Puerto de la Unión Centroamericana, associated with the regional union project. Trade through the gulf, including the export of indigo, contributed to the growth of the settlement and its connections with other Central American ports. In 1865, it became the capital of the new department of La Unión. Its subsequent development continued to be linked to transportation, fishing, and port infrastructure. This trajectory explains why the city is understood in relation to the sea: not only as a transit point but as a historical center of exchanges in eastern El Salvador.
