About East Coast
The Costa Oriente is the coastal strip in the eastern part of the country, located in the departments of San Miguel and La Unión, featuring dark volcanic sand and open sea waves. It is part of the Surf City II corridor, an extension of the coastal road inaugurated in April 2025, which connects eleven beaches between Usulután and San Miguel over a distance of thirteen kilometers. This project opened up coastal stretches that had only been accessible by boat for years. At dawn, fishing boats set out from the shore before the surfers arrive. The area combines beaches with strong waves, sought after by surfers, with stretches of calmer waters suitable for swimming. Artisanal fishing remains the main activity of its communities, and fresh seafood is served in local eateries. Most of the beaches can be accessed via the coastal road, with boat access to the more remote ones.
