About Suchitoto

Suchitoto is a colonial city on the shores of Lake Suchitlán, in the department of Cuscatlán, with cobblestone streets, tiled houses, and facades that have remained almost intact since the 19th century. It was, along with other towns in the region, one of the most important centers for indigo production in the country during the dye boom of the 17th century. At sunset, the bells of the Santa Lucía church mark the time as neighbors step out to sit on the sidewalks in front of their homes. The city thrives on cultural tourism and a handful of artists and filmmakers who have chosen it as their residence since the 1970s. On weekends, its streets fill with visitors exploring galleries, the viewpoint overlooking the lake, and the artisan market; the Historic Center can be walked through in just a couple of hours, and indigo continues to dye fabrics in workshops that open their doors to tourists.

History of Suchitoto

The name Suchitoto comes from the Nahuatl xuchit-tutut, meaning bird-flower. The town was relocated to its current site between 1545 and 1548, authorized by the Royal Audience of the Confines, following the abandonment of Ciudad Vieja, located 12 kilometers away. In the 17th century, it became one of the main centers for indigo production in the region, a trade that shaped its architecture and economy for generations. The government granted it the title of city in 1858, sanctioned by the Legislative Assembly on February 11, 1859. Suchitoto was the capital of the department of Cuscatlán until 1861, when the title was transferred to Cojutepeque.
