Lake Suchitlán is the natural complement to a visit to Suchitoto. From its shores, you can enjoy a vast landscape of water, numerous islands, and various species of waterfowl. Lake Suchitlán was formed between 1973 and 1976 with the construction of the Cerrón Grande hydroelectric power station on the Lempa River. As the water level rose, the higher parts of the land became the numerous islands that now characterize its landscape. Its name was proposed by Salvadoran filmmaker Alejandro Cotto by combining references from Suchitoto and Cuscatlán, and it is interpreted as "place of flowers." In 2005, the reservoir was declared a Ramsar site due to its importance for waterfowl.
