About La Libertad

The Costa del Bálsamo is the coastal strip of the La Libertad department, internationally known as Surf City, the closest to the capital and the most developed for beach tourism in the country. It takes its name from the balsam, an aromatic resin extracted from a tree native to this coastal mountain range, which was one of the most coveted export products during the colonial era. Between cliffs and estuaries, more than ten beaches with dark volcanic sand and breaking waves attract surfers from all over the world. Surfing sets the pace of the corridor: there are waves almost all year round, and the beaches come alive with classes for beginners and international competitions at Punta Roca or El Sunzal. Puerto de La Libertad is the hub of fishing life and the Mercado del Mar, while El Tunco and El Zonte serve as the epicenter for accommodation, restaurants, and nightlife. Traveling the entire coast, from end to end along the Coastal Highway, takes about an hour by car.

History of La Libertad

The name of this coast comes from the balm tree, which grows wild in the mountain range that separates the coastline from the inland valleys, between the municipalities of Jayaque, Talnique, Comasagua, Chiltiupán, Teotepeque, and San Julián. The indigenous peoples were already aware of its medicinal properties and called it ushit in Nahuatl. The resin was first exported in 1493, and during the Colonial period, it became a highly valuable product in Europe, marketed under the misleading name of Balsam of Peru to deceive pirates who attacked ships leaving from Acajutla. In 1939, the balm tree was declared the National Tree of El Salvador.
