Santa Ana is the capital of western El Salvador and one of the cities with the best-preserved historic centers in the country. Its architecture emerged from the coffee boom at the end of the 19th century. It serves as a natural starting point to explore the western region of El Salvador, including the Santa Ana Volcano and the Flower Route.

Before the arrival of the Spanish, this valley was Sihuatehuacán, “place of the priestesses” in Nahuatl, an important Pipil settlement linked to the Lordship of Cuzcatlán. On July 26, 1569, Bishop Bernardino de Villalpando consecrated it under the patronage of Señora Santa Ana and gave it the name it carries to this day. However, it was coffee that changed its destiny. Between the late 19th century and early 20th century, Santa Ana became the economic engine of El Salvador. This wealth translated into architecture: the neo-Gothic cathedral, the National Theater, the Municipal Palace, and dozens of mansions that still define the historic center. In 1894, the city was the scene of the Revolution of the 44, the uprising that overthrew the dictatorship of the Ezeta brothers. For this feat, it received the title of Heroic City, a name it proudly retains.

The patron saint festivities in honor of Our Lady Santa Ana, the largest in the West: parades of floats, the traditional Mail Parade, amusement fairs, and solemn masses in the neo-Gothic cathedral.

The historic center is covered with handmade sawdust and dyed salt carpets, marking the route of the processions through the colonial streets.
