Brief History
The project began in 1911, designed by the French architect Daniel Beylard, and the theater opened in 1917. Its style is eclectic — a blend of French Renaissance, Rococo, and Art Nouveau — which is particularly evident in the mural dome and the interior ornamentation. It has been a National Monument since 1979. The earthquakes of 2001 seriously damaged it, and it was restored in 2008. Beyond its artistic programming, it has hosted state events and performances that sustained the country's cultural life during difficult times.
