Brief History
It was inaugurated on March 15, 1882, by President Rafael Zaldívar, on the 40th anniversary of the death of Francisco Morazán. The monument to the Central American hero is made of Carrara marble and was crafted by the Durini Brothers: it was the first monument in the city. Throughout the 20th century, it was surrounded by businesses that are now part of collective memory, such as Restaurante Bengoa and Bar Lutecia. In the 1960s, water mirrors with mosaics by Carlos Cañas were installed, one of which was restored in 2017. There was a time, in the mid-century, when the square was used as a public parking lot.
