Brief History
It was born as Parque Dueñas and changed its name on November 5, 1911, when the first centenary of the first cry for independence was celebrated. It is presided over by the Monument to the Heroes, an angel that represents freedom. The three consecutive earthquakes on June 7, 1917, destroyed a large part of San Salvador and damaged the monument; many families camped here fleeing from the collapsed buildings. Between 1917 and 1920, it was rebuilt, restoring its original layout and adding columns on the sides. Since then, it has been the scene of protests, celebrations, and demonstrations: it is the most popular square in the heart of the city.
