Brief History
The crater that is visited today was formed by the activity of the San Salvador volcano, also known as Quezaltepeque. The eruption of 1917 opened a fissure on the northern flank and raised a smaller cone within the crater that people named Boqueroncito. The area was declared a national park and now features well-maintained trails, viewpoints at the edge of the caldera, and high-altitude cloud forest. It is the quickest access to a volcanic crater from a capital city in Central America: it is about 30 minutes from downtown San Salvador.

Visit Tips
Go early: after noon, the fog often obscures the view of the crater.
Bring a jacket even if it's warm in San Salvador: the temperature drops quite a bit up here.
El Picacho is another peak of the same volcano, higher than the crater. It's not the same as El Boquerón.
