National Palace

The National Palace stands over Plaza Barrios with 101 halls built between 1905 and 1911 in Italian marble and neoclassical style. It housed the Salvadoran government until 1974 and is now a National Monument.

Inaugurated in 1911, it served as the seat of the three branches of government and the epicenter of Salvadoran political power for much of the 20th century. It was designed by José Emilio Alcaine under the direction of José María Peralta Lagos. It has 101 rooms and four main halls, each with its own color: Red, Pink, Yellow, and Blue. It has been a National Monument since 1980. Today, it operates as a museum and cultural space, featuring exhibitions on independence and constitutional history.
