About Metropolitan Cathedral
The Metropolitan Cathedral crowns Plaza Barrios with its façade designed by Fernando Llort and a crypt that houses the tomb of Saint Óscar Romero, who was assassinated in 1980. It is the main temple of the country and a national pilgrimage center.

Brief History
The history of the temple dates back to 1888, but the current building began construction in 1956 and was consecrated in 1999. It features an eclectic style, with Byzantine and Romanesque influences, and is notable for its 45-meter dome and 50-meter towers. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of San Salvador. In the crypt rests Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero, which has made it a place of pilgrimage and remembrance. His funeral was held here in 1980, and it is the venue for La Bajada, the country's patronal celebration.
