The Olomega Lagoon is the largest natural body of freshwater in the eastern part of El Salvador. Olomega is a name of Lenca origin interpreted as "lagoon of eels." For generations, the communities along its shores and islands have maintained a direct relationship with the lagoon, primarily through artisanal fishing. On February 2, 2010, it was declared a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention, in recognition of its biodiversity and its role as a refuge for waterfowl.
