About Salcoatitan

Tasting yuca cooked over firewood and discovering the mosaics in the town center are two great reasons to visit Salcoatitán, in the Sonsonate department. This town on the Ruta de las Flores combines local cuisine with spaces dedicated to art, featuring galleries and mosaic details that enhance the stroll through its plaza and ancient church. The visit also allows you to get close to the centennial ceiba tree, one of its symbols, or enter the Museum of Printing to learn about the machines used to print texts and images.

History of Salcoatitan

Salcoatitán appears in the account of the journey of Fray Alonso Ponce, who passed through the town on July 4, 1586, and referred to it as Quetzalquatitan. Its indigenous name is related to Quetzalcóatl, although sources provide various interpretations, including "Place of Quetzalcóatl" and "Place among snakes and quetzals." The religious life of the town is marked by the ancient temple of San Miguel Arcángel, dated 1824. Today, its gastronomy and artistic expressions are part of its identity as a destination on the Ruta de las Flores.
