
Lake Coatepeque occupies a volcanic caldera measuring seven by ten kilometers, located in the district of El Congo, in the department of Santa Ana. It was formed over 70,000 years ago during an explosive eruption that expelled around 40 cubic kilometers of pumice. Subsequent lava domes, including the one that today forms Teopán Island, rose within the caldera itself. The water changes from a deep blue to a turquoise green in cycles that the Ministry of Environment has been monitoring since 1998. Surrounding the lake are hotels, restaurants, and clubs offering kayaking, jet skiing, and diving in its underwater hot springs. Mountain trails line part of the shore, providing views of Izalco Volcano and the Los Volcanes complex.
