Juayúa

Juayúa is a town of Nahua origin that existed before the Spanish conquest. During the 16th century, it became linked to Franciscan evangelization, and the devotion to the Black Christ emerged, which is the center of the patron saint festivities in January. Coffee transformed the economy during the 19th century. In 1877, the town was granted the title of villa under the name El Progreso; in 1906, it regained the name Juayúa and was elevated to city status. Its coffee prosperity was also accompanied by significant social inequalities. In January 1932, Juayúa was one of the main stages of the peasant and indigenous uprising and the subsequent state repression, a fundamental episode in the historical memory of western El Salvador. Decades later, the town found a new path to development through tourism. Since the 1990s, the gastronomic fair driven by local entrepreneurs has helped attract visitors on weekends and contributed to the growth of the Ruta de las Flores. Today, Juayúa is a place where coffee heritage, indigenous memory, religious devotion, and a renowned culinary culture coexist.
