Ilobasco

Ilobasco has roots that predate the conquest and a pottery tradition linked to its indigenous inhabitants. During the colonial period, the population consolidated under the name San Miguel de Ilobasco. Agriculture and the manufacture of clay objects were part of its economy long before miniatures became its most recognized image. In 1838, it received the title of villa, and in 1871, the title of city; two years later, it became part of the new department of Cabañas. In the mid-19th century, artisans began producing figures for Christmas nativity scenes and later incorporated characters from everyday life. In the 20th century, María Dominga Herrera stood out as a pioneer of miniature "surprises" and shared her technique with other residents. This collective effort transformed a domestic and utilitarian craft into an artisanal expression that today identifies the city both nationally and internationally.
