Chalatenango is the capital of the department of the same name, located in the mountainous northern region of the country, amidst pine forests and coffee plantations. The cool climate of the area and its mountainous landscapes set it apart from the lowland departmental capitals. The Agua Fría tourist center, on the edge of the urban area, offers spring-fed pools surrounded by teak forest. The region also features coffee farms in San Ignacio and Tejutla, mountain tourism, and access to Cerro El Pital, the highest point in the country.
