The volcano and the ancient town originally shared the name Tecapa, a Nahuatl term interpreted as "lagoon of stones." On February 17, 1891, the town was renamed Alegría in honor of the educator and priest José Miguel Alegría, and the lagoon later adopted the name of the city. It is also known as "the Emerald of America," a nickname that tradition attributes to the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral due to the greenish hue of its waters.
